*Calls for concerted effort to curtail spread of deadly virus.
As the number of confirmed cases of pandemic Coronavirus infections continues to increase on daily basis in Nigeria, an APC Chieftain in Kosofe Local Government Area, Alhaja Kafilat Ogbara has charged both the federal and state Governments to take drastic preventive measures to the grassroots by creating more isolation centres in Local Government Areas in order to curtail the spread of the deadly virus .
Alhaja Ogbara gave this advice at the weekend during an exclusive interview she granted Kosofe voice at her residence where she described the Coronavirus pandemic as pathetic and sad.
She stated that it would be impossible for some Nigerians to properly go into self- isolation due to poor economic standard of living, hence the need for Government to create more isolation centres at the grassroots.
She added that the isolated centres must be equipped with necessary facilities to take care of the terrible situation the country is presently enmeshed in, adding that wherever possible, guest houses should be converted into isolation centres.
Her words: “Government must take aggressive preventive measures to the grassroots and ensure that all the Local Governments are well equipped to take care of the ugly terrible situation we find ourselves.
“There must be constant monitoring of all these ‘Owanbe parties’. They should decentralize the isolation centres and, if possible, start converting guest houses to isolation centres because it will be impossible for a Nigerian with 10 to 15 family members living in a room to isolate himself or herself.
“They should be more aggressive in exact way they use to do with revenue collection otherwise the situation would go out of hand.”
The two time Federal House of Representatives Contestant in Kosofe federal Constituency while expressing sadness at the way COVID-19 is ravaging the global community, blamed the federal government for tardiness and nonchalance in its preventive approach to stop the highly infectious virus from being imported into the country.
She stressed that the failure of the government to take the bull by the horn when it mattered most by banning foreign travellers from high risk countries from coming into the country was largely responsible for the spread of the virus in the country.
She said: “Although I am an APC Chieftain but I am not happy the way we saw it coming and we allowed it to come in. We had all the opportunity and all the time to close our airspace and stopped travellers from high risk countries entering. But they were telling us infrared themometer would detect the temperature….; that we have just one index case. We heard that for about a week.
“Meanwhile, people from high risk countries were flying into Abuja and Lagos etc. And we could not even detect them. Now we are on our own and at risk”.
She therefore called on meaning individuals, CDC/CDA, Market leaders, Cooperate organizations and Residents of Estates to rally round the Government and salvage the terrible situation through provisions of necessary testing equipments, protective kits and isolation centres to be used in their various areas.
She also advised Nigerians to take adequate personal preventive measures by indulging in regular and routine practice of self-hygiene, self-isolation, social distancing and selective outing.
She strongly emphasized that people should regularly wash their hands with soap and alcoholic-base hand sanitizers and desist from going to parties and crowed places.
